May is Celiac Awareness Month

Do you or someone you know have Celiac disease? It’s estimated that 1 in 100 people in the United States alone have Celiac, an auto-immune disease where eating gluten (proteins in wheat, barley, and rye, and sometimes in oats) causes the body’s immune system to attack and damage the small intestine.

It’s also believed more than 2 million people have the disease but have never been diagnosed. Too often they’re just told they have a sensitive stomach or are diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Doctors often treat the symptoms without getting to the cause of frequent illness and stomach upset.

May is National Celiac Awareness Month. I know several people with Celiac and can only imagine the struggles they have after getting diagnosed. Because they really do have to dramatically change the way they eat, read the labels on everything and go through a minefield if they try to eat out.

Not only that, but many gluten-free foods are expensive! Luckily,  my beloved Amazon.com frequently has great deals on gluten-free items. And this month many Gluten Free Foods are the featured grocery specials. Everything from Bob’s Red Mill gluten free mixes to Barbara’s Bakery to Nature’s Path products.  If you’re lucky, an item will be discounted and then you can use Subscribe & Save AND an additional discount code on a given item.  Which could mean saving big bucks on these specialty foods.

If you’d like more information on Celiac Disease, you can check out Amy Leger’s site called The Savvy Celiac. Amy and I used to work at WFRV together; now she’s using her journalism background to keep those with Celiac up-to-date with the latest information.
