Your guide to food shelf life: expiration date, sell by, freeze by dates and more
I mentioned this about six months ago and thought it was time to revisit the subject. With all the fresh produce around, I thought it might be helpful!
I think it’s safe to say that no one wants food to go to waste. It’s a waste of money and a bad example to little kids who are still taught “there are starving children–eat your dinner.”
But sometimes you just don’t know if the leftovers you saved are still safe to eat or they should get tossed. That’s where StillTasty comes in.
The website doesn’t just cover food that is refrigerated, it also covers which pantry items need to be tossed and when. And answers a lot questions that may have gone through your head like:
- Is it OK to Put Hot Food Directly Into the Fridge?
- Expiration Dates: Should You Pay Attention?
- 10 Surprising Foods You Can Freeze
Bottom line, this site is a wealth of information on food storage. It’s interesting and easy to read. If you’re like me and keep a stockpile of foods in your house, you might find it interesting.
Thoughts of the late great George Carlin’s comedy routine are running through my head. He reaches into the fridge and pulls something out that is not recognizable. “Could be meat, could be cake. It’s meatcake!” (which you can see here, BTW–it’s fairly “clean” for George).
