Thanksgiving Dinner grocery comparison chart

Okay, you’ve seen all of this week’s sales, but let’s face it.  It can be mind-boggling keeping straight who has what items and at what price.  Well, you don’t have to worry cuz look at this handy dandy spreadsheet I made for Green Bay Consumer readers!  It lists some of the many popular Thanksgiving foods and  their prices at 6 area grocery stores.  Information was gathered either through the sales flyers or by a trip to the local store yesterday and today.

The table features about 25 items so if it says “show 10”, switch it to “25”.   I know this doesn’t give you all the prices on all the items you’re probably looking for, but it should give you an overview of what store will fit your needs best.

Remember that Festival is doing it’s best to just give us all turkeys this week with all of their in-store coupon specials but there’s nowhere to reflect that on the chart.  Also, you might want to click here to check some of the more popular coupons that are out there to make your dinner more affordable.

I had so much fun putting this together for you.  Am I a dork that I find this really cool?

Enjoy and happy Turkey Day meal planning!

Pink Slime: is it in Northeastern Wisconsin?

Pink Slime, Pink Slime, Pink Slime. Every time I open the paper or turn on the television, there it is.  The past few weeks there has been a lot of buzz about something called Pink Slime in beef products.  It’s the catch-phrase to describe LFTB or “Lean Finely Textured Beef”.   Pink Slime is described as scraps and waste from beef which is then treated with ammonia hydroxide to kill pathogens as well as remove fat. It’s then added to meat as a “filler”.  The USDA deems LFTB safe for consumption.  But many people are concerned about long-term health risks from eating this “filler”.

That begs the question whether grocers in Northeastern Wisconsin use Pink Slime in their beef products. Here’s what I found out:

  • Aldis:  Dutch grocery giant Aldi announced Friday “customers have been telling us that they do not want ground beef made with lean finely textured beef (LFTB). That’s why ALDI has decided that, we no longer will purchase ground beef made with this ingredient.”
  • Festival Foods* “has never had LFTB in its certified Angus beef ground round and ground sirloin. The chuck version “did contain a small, legal percentage of this trim. However, it will be free of LFTB beginning with our delivery on March 21,” said Dick Peppard, Festival’s food safety microbiologist.”
  • Copps/Pick ‘n Save*: “Our fresh and frozen Roundy’s ground beef does not contain this product,” said spokeswoman Vivian King. “We only use the freshest store-made ground beef using all natural fresh beef.”
  • Piggly Wiggly Midwest issued a statement to Green Bay Consumer via email: “Piggly Wiggly Midwest confirmed with their beef suppliers that the fresh beef sold at Piggly Wiggly Supermarkets throughout Wisconsin and Illinois does not contain “pink slime”.
  • Target***: Target Corporation released a statement to the Associated Press, “Our ground beef vendors do not use an ammonium hydroxide treatment in their production processes.  Any additional questions can be directed to vendors.”  (The Green Bay east store just started carrying beef in their remodeled store last week).
  • Woodmans issued their own statement on their website.  “Woodmans does NOT use “pink slime” or any type of filler in our fresh ground beef, ground chuck, or ground sirloin.”
  • WalMart**:  Walmart said meat and customer service department employees will be able to tell customers which meat contains the product. But the meat at Walmart will not be labeled that it contains textured beef.

There you have it.  Have you been more conscious of your ground beef purchases since hearing about Pink Slime?  Will the information here affect where you buy your ground beef?
