I have no idea where my mother got this recipe years ago, I can’t find the thing when I Google it.  But I thought I’d share an apple recipe since we are knee deep into apple picking season.

Cream Cheese Caramel Apple Dip

8 oz cream cheese, softened
1/3 c dark brown sugar
2 tsp dark Karo (corn) syrup
1/2 tsp caramel flavoring (I buy mine at Creative Cake Designs on West Mason)

Whip together and serve with apple slices.

I’ve seen variations on the web that use caramel ice cream topping or vanilla if you don’t want to buy caramel flavoring. I also use the caramel flavoring when I make French toast or pancakes, too, instead of vanilla.

Enjoy!

Apple Picking Season is here

There are some sure signs that fall is coming.  One of them is the arrival of apple picking season.

There are many places to get locally-grown apples, whether you pick-your-own or simply buy them.  Some places are already open!

Some (but not all) in the Green Bay area include:

  • Oneida Nation Orchard – 3976 West Mason Street, Oneida, just east of Green Bay. 920.869.2468
  • Apple Valley Orchard – 1670 Mar-El Road DePere. 920.336.0667.  Opening September 7.
  • Hillside Apples Casco –  E 2237 Highway 54, Casco. 920.837.7440.  If you get on their mailing list like I am, your post card will get you 10% off your entire purchase.  Opening “around Labor Day.”
  • Bauer’s Apple Shed – W7763 Wisconsin Ave. Hortonville  920.757.6187 Already picking!
  • Star Orchard Kaukauna 253 County Trunk CE. Opens August 31 for Pick-Your-Own
  • Hofacker’s Hillside Orchard W3964 Wege Rd Appleton. 920.734.0780 Already picking!
  • Heritage Orchard LLC – N2963 Lakeshore Drive Chilton  920.849.2158. Opening August 31.
  • Apple Creek Orchards, W 2810 Cty Rd S, Freedom.  920.832.0322.  Opening Labor Day weekend.
  • Apple Store – Already-picked apples, cherries and raspberries 1502 W Mason, Green Bay. 920.499.6671.

If you don’t have a favorite spot picked out or aren’t in the immediate Green Bay area, you might want to start at the Wisconsin Apple Growers Association page.  What I love about their page is that you can use their locator search engine to find an orchard near you.  But not only can you pick the distance, you can search by type of apple.

Apple Picking Season is here

Just like the strawberries earlier this summer, apple-picking has arrived 3 – 4 weeks earlier than normal.  As I mention in last week’s Taking Out the Trash, Hillside Apples started picking last week!

There are many places to get locally-grown apples, whether you pick-your-own or simply buy them.

Some of the closest to Green Bay include:

  • Oneida Nation Orchard 3976 West Mason Street, Oneida, just east of Green Bay. 920-869-2468
  • Apple Valley Orchard 1670 Mar-El Road DePere. 920-336-0667.  Favorite field-trip spot and good selection, too.
  • Hillside Apples Casco E 2237 Highway 54, Casco. 920.837.7440. For some reason, my mother has always liked to take the drive to Hillside for apples.   Maybe it’s because they have so many different varieties of pick-your-own apples as well as some locally-grown ones that are already picked.  I got their postcard a few days ago.  If you get on their mailing list like I am, your post card will get you 10% off your entire purchase.  Also a huge field trip spot.
  • Star Orchard Kaukauna 253 County Trunk CE.
  • Apple Creek Orchards, W 2810 Cty Rd S, Freedom.  920.832.0322
  • Apple Store – Already-picked apples, cherries and raspberries 1502 W Mason, Green Bay. 920-499-6671.

Fox Cities readers, you can check out this list of orchards compiled by Go Valley Kids.

If you don’t have a favorite spot picked out or aren’t in the immediate Green Bay area, you might want to start at the Wisconsin Apple Growers Association page.  What I love about their page is that you can use their locator search engine to find an orchard near you.  But not only can you pick the distance, you can pick what type of apple you are looking for.

Cream Cheese Caramel Apple Dip

8 oz cream cheese, softened
1/3 c dark brown sugar
2 tsp dark Karo (corn) syrup
1/2 tsp caramel flavoring (I buy mine at Creative Cake Designs on Shawano/Military, next to the new Topper)

Whip together and serve with apple slices.

I’ve seen variations on the web that use caramel ice cream topping or vanilla if you don’t want to buy caramel flavoring. I bought a jar about 5 years ago, kept it in the fridge and used the last of it yesterday when I made this dip. I also use the caramel flavoring when I make French toast or pancakes, too, instead of vanilla.

Enjoy!
