May is Celiac Awareness Month
Do you or someone you know have Celiac disease? It’s estimated that 1 in 133 Americans have celiac and more than 90% are undiagnosed!
Celiac is an auto-immune disease where eating gluten (proteins in wheat, barley, and rye, and sometimes in oats) causes the body’s immune system to attack and damage the small intestine.
Too often people are told they have a sensitive stomach or are diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Doctors often treat the symptoms without getting to the cause of frequent illness and stomach upset.
May is National Celiac Awareness Month. I know several people with Celiac and can only imagine the struggles they have after getting diagnosed. Because they really do have to dramatically change the way they eat, read the labels on everything and go through a minefield if they try to eat out.
Not only that, but many gluten-free foods are expensive! Luckily, my beloved Amazon.com frequently has great deals on gluten-free items. And this month many Gluten Free Foods are the featured grocery specials. Everything from Bob’s Red Mill gluten free mixes to Barbara’s Bakery to Nature’s Path products. If you’re lucky, an item will be discounted and then you can use Subscribe & Save AND an additional discount code on a given item. Which could mean saving big bucks on these specialty foods.

May is Celiac Awareness Month
Do you or someone you know have Celiac disease? It’s estimated that 1 in 100 people in the United States alone have Celiac, an auto-immune disease where eating gluten (proteins in wheat, barley, and rye, and sometimes in oats) causes the body’s immune system to attack and damage the small intestine.
It’s also believed more than 2 million people have the disease but have never been diagnosed. Too often they’re just told they have a sensitive stomach or are diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Doctors often treat the symptoms without getting to the cause of frequent illness and stomach upset.

September 13th: National Celiac Awareness Day
Do you have a specialty diet because you eat organic whenever possible, are diabetic, have nut allergies or have Celiac disease? Today is National Celiac Awareness Day.
It’s estimated that 1 in 100 people in the United States alone have Celiac, an auto-immune disease where eating gluten (proteins in wheat, barley, and rye, and sometimes in oats) causes the body’s immune system to attack and damage the small intestine.

But what does all that have to do with saving money?
I know several people with Celiac and can only imagine the struggles they have after getting diagnosed. They have to dramatically change the way they eat, read the labels on everything and go through a minefield if they try to eat out.
One of the biggest struggles is the prices they face in the stores for specialty foods–yikes! I can’t imagine how difficult it is for them to have a manageable budget. You may notice when I do grocery store match-ups or mention grocery deals on Amazon.com I try to include gluten-free, organic and other specialty deals because the prices are usually a lot higher than groceries for “normal” diets. These people need help saving money, too!
