Check your mailbox: $10 gift card for Kohls

Have you checked your mail this weekend?  A reader told me that she got a $10 gift card mailed to her from Kohls to be used on ANYTHING: regular, sale or clearance merchandise.  The gift card is valid April 18th through April 28th and is good in-store only.   And only one per customer. So I checked my mailbox and it turns out I got one, too.

I do not shop Kohls on a regular basis.  I am not signed up for their emails or mailers.  But I got one of these great coupons.  Did you?  Do you plan on using it?  If not, you can always drop it off at the coupon exchanges at either the Brown County Southwest Branch or the East Branch.

The Lure of the Sale Sticker

There is something compelling about a little orange sticker on an item. I admit that my eyes lock in on those stickers at stores all the time.  Hello, that’s what Target Tuesday is all about!

But do you ever find yourself buying something because the sticker says it’s 50% off? Or 75% off?  So you think you think you’re getting a deal, right?  But what if you weren’t planning on buying the item or have no real need for it?  Is it a case of “It was just too good a deal to pass up?”

It’s one thing if you’re buying it with a purpose, but just buying something because you see the original price versus what you pay in the store isn’t always a good deal.  Why?  There are accusations that stores actually raise their prices on some items and then mark them down, making the discount look greater than it really is.

Here’s an interesting article that broaches the subject: Is Kohl’s Marking Up Prices Before It Puts Items On Sale?

This is not an indictment of Kohls, I’ve seen the same thing occur on my beloved Amazon.com, most often from 3rd party sellers.  Sometimes their suggested retail price is higher than the real MSRP.  Then they “mark it down” and you see something that says “You save 67%”.  So you think you’re getting a deal.  However, if you went into a local store, that same item may be on sale for only 30% off but be the same price.  See what I’m getting at?

The lure of the sale sticker is also one of the reasons I never say how much I “saved” at the stores, it’s really how much I spent! “Saving” 40% off groceries means nothing to me, it’s how much I paid out of my pocket for the items I bought.

If I plan on buying a pair of winter boots and only want to spend $50, then find a pair on clearance for $75 with an original price of $200, it makes the item seem too good to pass up!  But I’d still be spending $25 more than I wanted, meaning I’m over budget.

Just some food for thought.
