Guest Post: I Was Up To My Eyes In Debt!

With the start of 2012, many make resolutions to get in shape, do more charitable work, or change your spending habits. And while I will never profess to be financial expert, I thought you might be interested in showing you one example of how changing your spending habits can make a big difference. In this case, $24.6 thousand dollars in debt paid off in only 3 years!

Stephanie W., the person who helps me with the weekly Aldi and Target posts, thought it was a good idea to share her personal story as a way to help others. We have many things in common including our love of saving money. But it wasn’t always that way.

———————–
Hi all! Steph here again.

I’ve been struggling with the idea of this post for awhile. One, because it’s pretty personal and two, I’m not the best writer in the world.

I’ll give you a little background.

When I was 18, Sears sent me a Credit Card. I felt like I was given the world! I continued to utilize this wonderful tool called plastic and added several others to my collection. And used them regularly. Just ask my mom. She tried and tried to tell me again and again. But I didn’t listen. Then one day in 2006 I realized I was up to my eyes in debt and I was using my Sears card at Kmart to buy groceries. NEVER buy consumables on credit. I knew it, I just didn’t have the option not to.

I was lost about what to do. Obviously I needed to spend less to get these minimums paid. But where would I start? I didn’t have a clue.

I firmly believe people come into our lives for a reason. One of my friends, Kari, introduced me to her boss, Tony  and his  wife, Meg. They were a fun couple and the four of us had some dinners together and saw a few movies. In November of 2005, I was talking with Kari about the heap of debt I was under and she reminded me that Meg helped people in my exact situation for a living. Where had I been that this seemed like news to me? Probably in that state of mind where I felt like it was my debt and if I put myself in it, I should be able to dig myself out of it.

I called Meg and made my consultation appointment. In 90 minutes I was shocked to learn how much debt I really had. (I had never had the guts to add it
all up) and also found a glimmer of hope.

In my next post I will tell you all about the Green Bay company that helped me do it!

Part Two of this story will be published Friday.
