Taking out the Trash: here’s to 2000+ Facebook fans!

Time for another edition of Taking out the Trash, the semi-regular posts that may or may not have something to do with saving money but are not specific deals.  I have a lot on my mind so I’m cleaning out the “garbage” in my head by Taking out the Trash.

Last year at this time Green Bay Consumer had about 700 Facebook fans.  Now we have more than 2000–Yay!  (I’m doing a fist pump right now).  Kristin and I want to thank you for your continued support; it’s because of word-of-mouth that we pick up many of our readers.  Every time we reach a milestone, it really is humbling.  Thank you so much!

To celebrate, we’re going to start a giveaway!  And believe me, it’s one you won’t want to miss.  Really.  Seriously.  HUGE.

Speaking of giveaways, we’re actually going to have two giveaways: another giveaway will start on Sunday as well.  Here’s a hint: what’s big and black and swooping into town later this month?  Did you figure it out?

Maybe it’s Chuck FM (104.3) playing Christmas music 24/7, but I’m in the holiday mood quite early this year!  I put up the outside decorations during a 50-degree day.  That didn’t prevent the neighborhood vandals from destroying half of the displays, but I know what my mom always told me will come to pass:  “You just wait, you’ll get yours.”

I am planning on putting up two Christmas trees next week.

Two trees?  Yes, two.  I am an ornament collector and have several “themes” that we rotate.  I decided to pull out the Green Bay Packer-theme this year for the first time since 2000!   I know my son will love it because he’s become one huge Packers fan the past few years.

And just because I’m crazy enough to do it, I’m going to put up a Disney Princess-themed tree, too.  The three girls will definitely love that one!

Yes, we’re talking full size trees for both.  Yes, I’ll share photos with you once I’m done!

I find it odd that I haven’t thought much about Thanksgiving this year.  It’s probably my favorite holiday because of it’s simple message.  For years we hosted Thanksgiving dinners for my family.  That is, until I gave birth one year about two weeks before the holiday.

Speaking of which… Oh my, my youngest is turning three years old.  Hard to imagine.  Also hard to imagine that I’ve been writing up deals for readers like you for almost as long–I started when she was six months old.  Where has the time gone?

I’m still formulating a Black Friday plan-of-attack for Green Bay Consumer and will let you know what, if anything, to expect from us that day.

Finally, a special thank you to all active and retired military personnel as we honor them on Veteran’s Day this weekend.

Have a fabulous weekend everyone!

Time for another edition of Taking out the Trash, the semi-regular posts that may or may not have something to do with saving money but are not specific deals.  I have a lot on my mind so I’m cleaning out the “garbage” in my head by Taking out the Trash.

This week my friend Jill at Madison Consumer decided to move on to other projects.   I decided I was crazy enough to take over Madison Consumer as well as continue my duties here at Green Bay Consumer.

If you have friends or relatives in the Madison area, be sure to tell them about Madison Consumer.  I’ll be sharing the same sort of deals found here, but for our neighbors in the state capitol.

This could be very interesting; I can just imagine the kids getting sick and being so sleep-deprived that I post a Green Bay event on the Madison site or vice versa.  I know you guys will help me out by continuing to let Kristin and me know about any fabulous Green Bay-area deals you find.

The toughest part will be to pace myself.  It took me a long time to figure that out with Green Bay Consumer.  (Some would say that I am still doing too much with too little time).  Only time will tell.

I also wanted to say thank you to all the readers who participated in my Little Sam’s Club posting.  With your help, I am donating 215 items from my personal stockpile to the Boy Scouts’ Scouting For Food Drive tomorrow.  Boy, will the scouts be surprised at the bounty on our doorstep!

For now, I’m off to my weekly Digital Detox. Have a fabulous weekend everyone!

Time for another edition of Taking out the Trash, the semi-regular posts that may or may not have something to do with saving money but are not specific deals.  I have a lot on my mind so I’m cleaning out the “garbage” in my head by Taking out the Trash.

Congratulations to Julie L. who won the Amazon Kindle Fire and Cindy S. who won the Barnes & Noble Nook Color tablets the past two weeks!  We’re happy to bring you more great contests in the future; it’s our way of saying THANK YOU for your support and for continuing to spread the word about Green Bay Consumer.  The more people that use our website, the better prizes we can give back to you!  Pssst… that’s a blatant hint to tell friends and family about the site if you haven’t already done so. 😉

Speaking of giveaways, you have until 11:59 pm Sunday night to enter to win a Family 4-pack of tickets to Sesame Street Live.  The event will be held November 9 – 11 at the Brown County Veterans Memorial Arena.  Click here to go to our contest page.

This week Green Bay Consumer hit a milestone.  We’ve had more than half a million page views since the site launched in April 2011.  Considering we didn’t have many fans the first six months, I think that’s a huge accomplishment.

Funny thing is that we hit the 500,000 milestone, and I didn’t notice it for a few days!  There was a time when I was obsessed with how many people visited Green Bay Consumer on any given day.  Over time, I’ve learned not to focus on that; if we are doing a good job, the readers will come.  And you have– Again, thank you for your support!

Think we’ll hit one million page views by this time next year?  Let’s aim for it, okay?

If you didn’t get a chance to go leaf “peeping” last weekend, we’re at peak fall colors this weekend.   (Fans of The West Wing will know the leaf peeping reference).  If that isn’t your thing, remember that there are a ton of events and activities going on.  Click here for the Green Bay area.  Click here for the Fox Cities area, courtesy our friends over at Go Valley Kids.

Enjoy the beautiful Wisconsin fall colors while they last!

Taking out the Trash: Fall fun!

Time for another edition of Taking out the Trash, the semi-regular posts that may or may not have something to do with saving money but are not specific deals.  I have a lot on my mind so I’m cleaning out the “garbage” in my head by Taking out the Trash.

Fall is in the air!  This is my favorite season for so many reasons: apple picking, leaves changing colors, football (going to see my alma mater tonight!), crisp mornings turning into moderate-temperature days, pumpkin pie, cider, haunted houses, hayrides and so much more!

Two month-long dining deals I don’t want you to forget about as you partake in fall activities:

Kids Eat Free.  I want to compile a list of restaurants that regularly offer free kids meals.  The now-defunct GB Savers had a list compiled, but I know that there have been many changes since it was put together.  We can gather a lot of the national chain restaurant info ourselves but need help with the locally-owned places.  Please feel free to leave a comment so we can get that put together for your reference.

Thanks so much for giving Kristin a warm welcome to the wonderful world of “blogging”.   She’s a great asset to Green Bay Consumer! I’ve already got her chained to her computer, typing up information on all the great fall activities, haunted attractions and more.

My family was very involved with the March of Dimes Haunted House in the 1980s and 1990s, so I have a soft spot for all those great haunted houses that are usually raising money for a cause, too!

One of the many lifelong friends I made at the M.O.D. is a great guy who runs a website called Made Ya Scream.  Doug specializes in haunted attraction photography but also takes “regular” photos as well.   You’ll be seeing some of his artwork as Green Bay Consumer Facebook Timeline Cover Photos. If you like his work, he’s for hire!   Thanks much, Doug!

Speaking of which, we’ll have a spot on our home page for all those on-going fall activities, much like we did with our Summer Fun section.   We’ll also do a weekly round-up of some of the major events going on.  Click here for this weekend’s list.

We had a great response when I mentioned it on Facebook, but we’re still looking for a few businesses interested in donating to our 24 Days of Holiday Giveaways this December.  If you or someone you know is interested in helping out, click here.

Speaking of giveaways, you have until 11:59pm Sunday night to enter to win an Amazon Kindle Fire from Green Bay Consumer.  We’re so happy to be able to give one lucky reader this fantastic prize valued at almost $200!  And you don’t have to jump through hoops, become a fan of a dozen Facebook pages, leave a comment, etc.  We’re all about low-maintenance and easy giveaways just for you!

We’ll be having a few more giveaways this fall to celebrate my favorite season so stick around!

I’ll be back here bright and early Sunday morning with Festival Foods, Target, and all the other posts you normally see here on Sundays.

Have a fantastic weekend everyone!
